206 GTI 180 timing belt not starting???

So I changed the timing belt and all the pulleys water pump etc today.

I followed the instructions in the Haynes manual bang on and I have used timing pins for all the cams. I double checked the cams and crank timing holes after placing the belt on and rotating it 10 times like it says to.

I followed the instructions bang on to the letter and have done timing belts before.

For some reason the car turns over but just will not fire!!!

Is this due to having the ECU and battery unplugged for so long???

or have I just f****d up somewhere???

Unplugging the battery shouldn't make a difference. Although how did you disconnect it as there is a set procedure for this...

I disconnected the quick release on the positive terminal mate.

I waited 5 mins after reconnecting just in case the ECU needed time to sort itself out? I left the negative connected throughout the entire belt change and didn't disconnect the ECU just moved it to one side that's all.

I'm going to pull it back apart tomorrow and triple check the timing marks to make sure there bang on.

So strange tho as I have followed the instructions smack on and got this result.

Well I believe that what goes wrong is the timing,as far as I know,the timing of this engine need to be done with special tools,not only the pins.

Not the brightest idea Peugeot had ... The correct side to disconnect first is the earth side ie negative.

That shouldn't actually matter too much unless you spiked the ecu/bsi when reconnecting ... but there is a recommended disconnect/reconnect procedure ...

Ha-ha I may have f****d up Razz

I locked the Crankshaft pulley with a 8mm rod and the 2 cams with the recommended tools it says in the Haynes manual =]

I'm going outside in 10 mins to start over again and see whats happening down there and re-install the belt.

How do I go about re timing it if it is out by 1-2 teeth on the belt??

I did double check by rotating the engine 10 times then re inserting the locking pins and they all lined up?

So after some research there are 2 holes on the exhaust cam for timing it???

Had the car apart and back together today and it wants to run but just doesn't quiet get there.

How to I go about moving the exhaust cam whilst the belt is off to try and locate the 2 different holes on the exhaust cam??

Is it a case of turning it by hand or other means?

The Haynes manual doesn't cover the GTI 180. ..

Well as I said before,there must be special tools used to fix the camshafts,and the crankshaft also,either if you have it fixed with a bolt in the center,or 4 bolts,it still need the tools,so I say you ask for help of a mechanic you know,or a friend to do the timing from start,as you need to follow the marks so all line up again,also there is a tool for fixing the tensioner on it's right place.

So got the car started today and all the coolant bled and idles lovely.

I have a issue with power loss now!!! (It's never ending haha :P)So it drives OK there just seems to be no power what so ever.

Soooo I have seen so many pictures and have even popped to see Kwik Fit who's data base has no where near the same engine diagram as the GTI 180.

Are there 2 wholes in the exhaust cams as people mentioned on other forums or 2 on the Inlet Cam??

It seems to be starved if that makes sense.

starved of air you mean when trying to rev?, mine is parked with the same fault atm. I can post a video of my timing fault, I've not fixed it yet t but i'm sure my timing out as it ran fine before i touched the timing. it probably is the the timing was set before the crank pulley was fitted so the obvious timing mark on the bottom pulley is wrong to start with?

youve got to check your timing again im sure, also the 180 has a different timing hole location on the exhaust pulley, there's a trick hole as the back plate for the timing cover is the is the same for the standard gti which has the hole in a slightly different location the pin for the exhaust cam on the 180 is verythin at the tip but wide all the way through the pulley.

Yea after more research i should have bought the proper tools but no one seems to have a kit just for the !*).

There are 2 holes on the exhaust cam yes and I intend move the timing on the exhaust cam to re locate the second hole.
Which is the fault in the first place I think! (And me touching it with out the proper timing kit)

I have a 53 Plate GTI 180 with the 4 bolt configuration bottom pulley; and not the key-way one.
I will be updating this with a series of pictures after I get it sorted and time it correctly; but for the time been i will be working the next few days on nights so no 180 love for now :/

I intend to make a step by step walk-through on how I did my 180 just for reference purposes as so many people have f****d up in the past!

The problem I have found is too many people say that you need the correct tools (which you do I agree) and not enough people are providing detailed infomation on the matter.

It seems a very vague subject on the 180 really????
