I just got a fix-er-upper 206 last wednesday. Its an MY99 206 1.4 XS automatic. Driven a lot, and seen even more.

Supposedly it had a "running problem". When I got it, it had a almost flat battery, the engine cranked a bit but didnt start. Lots of beeping and relay clicking inside.

We had a bit of trouble trying to get the gearshift to move from P to N so we could tow it to my house. It was locked in P but removing the battery cable and some wiggling while my friend was rocking the car back & forth got it to neutral. But we got there!

I took the battery off and charged it. Next day went to try to start it. Instead of hearing the starter, I saw a puff of smoke from the dash! WTF! No trouble codes, but I get smoke signals.. It was both horrifying and hilarious at the same time.

Later I did some checking under the dash. It has a Frigette cruise control retrofitted, everything looks ok. The instrument cluster smelled burned. I took it off and for sure, burnt smd resistor! See pic:

Maybe it would work if I just replace the SMD resistor? Its a bit badly burnt though, might need a bit of wire and soldering to fix the traces. Strange that it would just go like that. My friend said he thought the cabin smelled a bit burned when we got the car even before.

But strange the car went to worse after removing and charging the battery. Would this point at the BSI? I need to still try to reset it and check the grounding of the car.

Can anybody point where the engine and dash grounds are?

Is it hard to remove the dash to get a better look into whats under it?

Are there any common connectors/relays etc. that "go" which I could easily test with my multimeter.

Will it start if all else is ok even without the instrument cluster?

This car was dirt cheap and it is a beater, but has inspection valid until the end of the year. I'd like to drive it atleast until there if not longer and maybe also learn something along the way Smile

It seems to have an OBD port, what protocol does it use? What software do I need to find on my laptop to do diagnostics or fault finding? Are there instructions on how to virginize the ECU, BSI, instrument cluster or program keys/immobilizer?? Taking it to the dealer is nuts. Finding correct control boxes/instrument cluster for an automatic (rare) can be a problem too.

What are the best forums to find deep level information not just changing components but fixing or hacking them? I've done some stuff to my Hondas and BMWs.

I couldnt reset the BSI since I cant get the driver power window go down. Started to check for wiring and fuse boxes.

The engine bay fuse box is really dirty. Why have they put it so that dirt can get inside?? It needs to be taken out and I need to give it a good clean.

I found a bad ground cable under the battery. Going to the transmission from the chassis.

Can somebody point me to all grounds in the engine bay and also the grounds inside the cabin/under the dash?

What connectors are prone to connection problems? Where are they located at?

The gearbox earth is quite a common fault. This may be the root of your problem.

As far as I know you can't virginize the BSI. No doubt somewhere like BBA reman could possibly offer advice. Also the BSI, ECU and immo chip are all paired and if you change one, then you need to change all 3 from the same donor car.

The best software and hardware for diagnostics is PP2000 with a Lexia interface, This will give you all the dealer functions, apart from the ones that require connection to Peugeot servers, unless you buy the genuine thing which is a damn site dearer than the clones available online.
