I bought a Y-reg Peugeot 206 LX (3-door hatchback, manual gearbox, 1360cc engine, 150,000+ miles) in June 2013 and joined this forum in October of that year, thinking I might have problems with a car that old. Apart from a couple of minor niggles, it has been a very good car for its age. And now it has had its first major problem.
Driving home after a couple of hours on A roads, I started hearing a new noise. It's a kind of cross between a knocking and juddering noise which, from my normal right-hand driving position, seems to be coming from the offside front. The first thing I did was check my MOT certificate for advisories, and found this:
"Offside front Macpherson strut has slight movement in the upper support bearing assembly."
I recorded the sound using a digital recorder and uploaded it here:
soundcloud.com/garrykn.../car-noise
You'll hear me accelerate then lift my foot off the pedal, allowing it to coast under power, and the noise starts. I accelerate again, lift my right foot up again, and you hear the noise again. If I lift my foot off the accelerator then declutch, the noise stops, but comes back as the car slows right down.
I took the car into my local (independent) mechanic and he said that this advisory was irrelevant and that the bad news was that the car needs a new gearbox. I think he mentioned the differential. I know only the basics of how cars work, so this didn't tell me anything useful. He told me this less than 20 minutes after I left the car with him, so I'm assuming he went by the sound, without going 'under the bonnet'. He quoted £660 for a reconditioned gearbox plus fitting. Since the car is probably worth less than that by now (I paid £900 for the car plus full service and MOT), I'm planning to look around for a cheaper option and, if I can't find one, scrap the car. It's timely as the MOT is due on the 9th of June.
He said the car would be OK to drive for a while but sooner or later the gearbox will go. He seems to be a good mechanic and I have no reason to doubt him, so I'm not looking for a second opinion. But I would really appreciate some advice from those in the know, bearing in mind that I can't do any repairs myself as I have limited mobility.
When the gearbox/differential/whatever does go, what can I expect? I might be parked at home, halfway round a roundabout, or doing 70 on the fast lane of a motorway, and will need to be able to get the car safely to the side of the road. Am I likely to get ample warning? What should I listen out for? Will it suddenly lose power? Do I assume that I'll have to coast the car into the roadside, since I won't be able to change down?
Finally, I'm in the Bromley (SE London) area. Does anyone know where I might solve the problem for less than £660?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.
Edit:
I found this video with a 206 making a similar noise, referring to the clutch bearing. Could this be what my mechanic was referring to?
