Hi all,
I'm wondering if you can help.
My brother purchased a pug 206 V Reg 1.1 LX from a mate recently.
The car has a full MOT etc and was working fine.
Suddenly the car conked out on him and Garage said that the battery was dead. I fitted a brand new battery for him and the car now starts however the battery light stays on constantly and if you rev it it goes dimmer.
On driving back from Chorley to Manchester it cut out twice and the car appears to run lumpy/lack of power and misfires.
Do you have any idea what this could be? I was thinking perhaps the coil pack. It was recently serviced in November. It's only done 55k miles.

Get the alternator checked. The old battery might not have needed replacing, just some charge putting into it

Ok thanks will do.
Is there any way of checking it bar putting a multimeter on it which I don't have currently?
Would it be causing the misfire?

Not the best way as ideally needs load testing.

It could cause a misfire if the battery isn't 100% and especially if you are driving with other electrical items turned on. When it's dark, go out and start the car and turn the headlights on. If they go brighter when you rev it, it's usually a good sign of the alternator going.
It's also worth checking the earth to the gearbox, but you should get other symptoms with that.

Hi Just to update: I saw a video where someone said that you could sort of test it by running the engine then unplugging the positive on the battery. is this right? I saw a video and his car kept running. The 206 didn't though. Instantly died.

I had the stock + quick disconnect pop off of its own a couple of times (until replaced with a better type connector) and the car would stay running, just not start once turned off.
The fact that the car dies instantly indicates that the alternator isn't providing. Could be a fault in the alternator, the charging regulator or possibly the connections.
Same goes for the battery light remaining on. That it dims when engine is revved means that a little, but not enough is provided. Points to alternator or charging regulator...

using a voltmeter is good to check,start the car,and see the reading when you connect the voltmeter to the battery terminals,if it shows 13.7 to 14.1 then all is good,but i doubt that the alternator charges,so if the reading is not changed,about 12 or 11 volts,then replace the alternator or fix it.
