Happy Sunday all. Just wanted to ask people their opinions. I have a 2000 W reg 206 LX that has been a bit of a pain with the idle issue. It has evened out a bit but you can notice it at times. This car has done 138000 miles (picked it up at 36000 miles) but hasn't really ever let me down. Motorway driving is smooth and economical, never overheats even on the hottest and traffic jammed days...the air con still works! I have the chance to buy a 52 plate 206 with 38000 miles on it. It hasn't really been used a great deal....must of spent a bit of time sitting around as there is rust on the back quarter and the engine has a lot of algae around the bonnet. My car has had new front shocks (Dec 14) new Cat (March 15) new coil pack and is MOT'ed till Feb 16. This new one is MOT'ed till Oct this year...they want £700 for it. Both this and my current one were CAT C but returned to the road. My car has the 206 head oil leak, but no oil or water cross over...and has leaked since I bought it. My car does need new drop links but as far as I know that's it. So, stupid question....sell this and buy the newer one? My timing belt was changed at 70000.

Have you asked why it was a Cat C? Rust on the back quarter might be a clue and have been a bodged repair

If you had the time to swap the shocks and Cat (providing compatible) over, then it would make sense to buy the lower mileage one, although you never know what problems it is going to throw at you in a couple of months time

I know why it was a CAT C...it had been hit on the back...just needed a new rear bumper...very much like mine had been hit at the back. Can't change the cat...mine is the older one underneath with one O2 sensor, the new one is the two O2 sensor cat near the manifold. The rust just seems to be where moisture has got under the paint and it has started to bubble...its near the fuel cap and along near to the rear passenger door. Everything feels good when I took it for a spin. Just not sure as I know my car inside out...all I use it for really is to get to and from work, so it is motorway driving 90% of the time. It is always a gamble buying a new second-hand car...and am a bit concerned because money is a bit tight. If mine blew up tomorrow then yes, I'd have to get a new car...but other than the way it looks...a dent here, a scratch there...the gearbox and clutch are just the same as when I first got it.

If you have place to keep the old one, SORN her and buy the newer one. in this you'll have no time pressure to swap parts or even turn it into a little experimental project car (is what I'm intending to do)

or drive yours until she says a final no, then buy some 50-100k 2.0 HDi, it will run you for another lot, that car is like a tank if looked after, and cheaper to run

I'm going to keep it for now. Driving into work today it is such a smooth drive. Yes, it is a basic LX..simple because it was first registered on July 2000, crystal green (don't like that colour!) but it gets me about. So, will get the timing belt changed in July or August and see how it goes.

I phoned the insurance today to see the cost of transferring the policy to the other car in question. Mine: W reg LX...new one: 52 Reg LX...£130 a year extra!

Coolant changes, brake fluid change, good fuel and chnage all the filters on a regular always help smooths things along

MrMac, check your tax, my 2.0 HDi W plate is ~£100 dearer than the same engine from March 2001 onward

That is one thing I have been naughty with...I have never changed the water/coolant. In fact, it has probably never ever been changed because I got it at low mileage. Yes, I have topped up but that is it Embarassed . I will be getting the timing belt done, probably in August so will get the water pump changed as well. I have got into the habit of not using super market fuel.
