Just an update - can put this one in Problem Solved section if required.
Got the wiring loom from a rear door (with a speaker) and transplanted same into my replacement n/s/r door that was missing a speaker. As the car was originally wired for speakers in the rear, this was the only modification I needed to do and it all works ok. I used a Pioneer DEH-X5800BT head unit, Pioneer TS-G1732i co-axial speakers for the front and Pioneer TS-G1332i co-axial speakers for the rear. It's not gonna blow the doors off or anything but it's still a significant improvement over the stock system and the Bluetooth is really useful for phone based music and calls. Steering wheel controls also work using this adapter lead (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIONEER-PEUGEOT-206-307-Steering-Wheel-Stalk-Adaptor-/350268992937?hash=item518da8ada9) although you'll need to check which one you'll need (mine's a 2002 model 206 1.1 LX).
I got a new battery prior to replacement and all seems to be working fine (using the "soft boot" procedure outlined on the forum). The only problem is that I've lost the clock/track/temp display in the dash, but can get most of this on the stereo anyway, so am reasonably content all round.
