Hey guys,
Last night one of my gear linkages came off and had to phone the mighty AA...lol as i was a good 10 miles from home. They put a clip on it to temporarily hold it together but said it wouldnt last long and to get it to a garage in the morning. I was wondering if there was a how to on how to change a gear linkage somewhere? its one of the small 6inch ish ones. And will this clip last a few days?? and finally, generally how much am i looking at if i get this 1 linkage replaced at a garage? Cheers guys.  joni

I had two linkages replaced the other weekend which came to £60 including labour charges, gives you a rough idea

Principal is the same.
Once the battery tray is off its 'just' a case of popping off the gearlinkage to the gearbox... 2 spanners levering up, took me some time and cut my hands up pretty bad.
Its because the standard GTi linkages have rubber bushes that like to break and the ball joint gets stuck on, note that in my picture I have replaced them with 'Group N' ones

the link will pop off easily with a 12/13mm open ended spanner. the new one will go on no probs.
easily done yourself if you have no problem getting underneath. i'd ring up your local pug and get one ordered in ASAP.

its not the transmission end thats come off its the other end. Is it literally just a case of taking the battery and battery tray off then just popping both ends of the little linkage off and pushing the new 1 on?

Can you get away with just removing the battery tray to get to it?

i think i could but i mean to get the old 1 off do you just pop it off? not bolts or anything? and to put the new 1 on you just push it on?

I've been trying to have a go, but having trouble undoing this one dodgy clip on my air intake so I cant get to it, I'm wondering if just removing the battery tray will be enough

You need to be underneath really, even then it's a struggle.

Ive just managed to change it myself from above! Thank god! Went to peugeot and got the part which was 20.99 and had a go myself. I had to take out the battery,battery tray and i also took out the air intake system to allow better access. Took me about half an hour but i managed it! the transmission end you can clip on with 2 hands but the other end you NEED a pair of large grippers which clicked it in easily Drama over now...For now...lol Joni

hi i need to do this on my sons car one of the shorter rods I have ramps is it easier doing it from underneath or is it easier to remove the air intake, battery & tray and do it from the top?

I just done the 2 lower small rods I done it from above and underneath easy enough hardest bit was getting the broken ends of the gearbox side.
