A lady friend of mine has bought a 206 glx (W reg)

At first the engine was overheating and the fan would not come on. Looking at the relays there was corrosion to the pins and one of the wires had gone.

I've repaired the wire, and the fan comes on when the engine overheats or I unplug the temp sensor on the engine.

Now the problem is that all of a sudden out of now where the temp dial will max out, the fan will kick in and I get the red stop sign on the dash. It does this for a few seconds and then the temp returns to normal.

Any ideas?

My W-plate 2.0 HDi gets its temp dial to jump up as soon as I turn to ignition. I thought is its way to reset/calibrate, as it goes back down shortly.

And since that dirty derv never gets really hot, it's driving without a fan, so I cannot tell if the fan would start then. Sorry to be of little help, but thought I'd share this needle jumpiness (as apparently it doesn't happen for e.g. PezHdi, who was mistakenly alarmed by seeing this on my dashboard)

Missus' 1.6 16v CC, year 2007 (L-plates to P-plates to NO-plates, but now she wants powwer:))
£50 1.4 HDi, year 2002 (seatless transporter, SORNed, rust needs patching)

Possibly needs a new temp sender .. my 1.4 HDi did that and the new sender sorted it out.
Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

Out of interest, has the needle ever jumped whilst engine on for you? And how many times per trip?

Had the exact issue on a 2.0HDi, even though the car had drive a mile down the road, gauge would go sky high and stop light would come on.

New green coolant sensor and all was well.

Thanks for the information to those who've posted.

I've been having a look and as the car has a digital climate control A/C, I've checked and the low speed of fan is not working either.

I think the low speed fan should come on when A/C is needed or as the engine heats up a little.

Am I right in thinking that if the ECU tries and puts the low speed of the fan on, it will throw a wobbler and engage the high speed fan on tricking the instruments that its overheating?

Could this be either a faulty relay ( they were quite corroded ) or a faulty low speed fan resistor?

Well when you turn A/C on,the low speed should come on,if not, then you have a problem with your cooling fan that you need to find out,try to replace the relay,or clean it with contact cleaner.

Also you might have a faulty temp sensor, keep that in mind.

A/C system could also be low on gas pressure & the system protection switch could be preventing the A/C system from engaging the compressor clutch.

Thanks again guys, the A/C works, I can hear the compressor clutch kicking in and the lights dim slightly until the alternator takes up the slack and the engine revs change a bit too.

I've got a low speed fan resistor in the post as we speak, Temp sensor seems fine as when I unplug it the engine automatically goes into hot mode.

Circulation between top and bottom radiator hoses also seems good.

I think the problem lies with the wiring to the low speed fan relay, the relay itself or the low speed fan resistor.

How do you know slow speed fan isn't working It isn't easy to tell as you won't hear it unlike high speed. Inside the engine bay you will feel the air being drawn through the radiator but you are very unlikely to hear the fan running over the engine noise.

Seems like replacing the two speed fan resistor had sorted the problem.

Low speed kicking in first either when air con is on, or engine is mildly overheating. If low speed does not work the ECU throws a wobbler and simulates max heat reading to kick in the high speed fan.

At least thats my theory.

The system is designed so the ecu knows if the cooling fan has been commanded to run but the fan itself hasn't responded.

Yeah, awesome bit of engineering. I can see why a resistor needs airflow. But keeping the relays where they are right behind the grill is just asking for trouble.

If I can be bothered I will splice into the loom as it runs down the right hand side of the fan and keep the relays tucked up behind the nearside headlight.
