Hello. My old 206 has failed its test  ....I love that flipping car! The rear brake valve is seized and leaking...CO cannot get it below 0.58...max is 0.30. Is it worth trying to replace the valve? The part is only £67 but fitting it would be a rusty nightmare.

If i was you i would have a go at changing it mate to be honest  67 quid to get it threw an MOT is pretty cheap just had to spend £300 to get my 180 threw test haha No matter what car you buy it will normally come with problems

Surely repairing the car would be cheaper than getting something else. If you love the car, getting it repaired is a no-brainer

I know what you mean...but the problem is with the emissions. I had the cat changed last march, I have changed the lambda, the ICV, checked for vac leaks, new air oil and fuel filter and used decent fuel and cataclean and it still failed. The machanical side yes, easy ish...but if I can't get it through the emissions its a waste. It just runs too rich and nothing will sort it....no codes either. Plus to change the valve is a nightmare...the old one is rusted onto the lines solid.

Genuine cat fitted OR micky mouse aftermarket crap?
A second hand genuine cat is better then any aftermarket one.
Post all the emissions figures so we can get an idea on how it's running.

Fast idle test:
CO MAX 0.30% Reading 0.58%
HC MAX 200ppm Reading 62ppm
LAMBDA 0.97-1.03 Reading 1.01
Second fast idle test:
CO MAX 0.30% Reading 0.54%
HC MAX 200ppm Reading 66ppm
LAMBDA 0.97-1.03 Reading 1.01
Natural Idle Test:
Engine speed 750-950
CO MAX 0.50% Reading 0.85%
The cat was sold as type approved...but it is rather small looking.

Went for a 40 min drive, running it hard so the revs got higher. Got to the test station at 9.20, car being tested 9.30. I must be to do with this lumpy idle...it's making it run rich. Maybe an injector is slightly out...I dunno...I am at a loss!

Just had the parts fitted...everything is super now. However...I reckon the cat is shot...that is why it failed. It seems to be over fuelling...thus ruining the cat. What could be causing the flooding of the engine?

Whip out your plugs and see if there is a colour change across the cylinders... this could indicate a bad injector if one plug is particularly black/sooty

Could be any or combination of the following:-
Cold Cat.
Poor performing cat.
Excess fuel (leaking injector or other fault)
Blocked inlet / air filter (reduced air in = excess fuel.)
Leaking exhaust in front of lambda sensor.
Whilst it is usually rich mixture that causes excess CO it can, on rare occasions, be caused by excessive lean mixture. The very lean mix prevents the cat getting up to temperature so the cat doesn't work properly.

I'm thinking about changing the injectors. Managed to just get it trough the test...but it was close. I want to keep the car for as long as possible. I have over 150000 miles now and want to get to 200000. I did 18000 miles last year and the year before over 20000. It is old but I still love it. Timing belt and water pump change at 140000, new tyres, new wishbones, new front shocks last year. If it stays good then just before the next test I am going to change the plugs, injectors ( going to by one a month then change them all) and change the cat the day before the test. I did change the air filter...cant find any vacuum leaks, no exhaust leaks. I am going to get a coolant change next month as well.
