Could someone tell me what's the best way to remove the crankshaft pulley on my car. I don't have a impact driver.
I was told to put it in 5th gear to stop it moving but when I had it in gear and tried to rotate it anticlockwise the pulley rotated.
Thanks,

In gear and foot on the brake, might need to jump on your breaker bar.
Some can be tight as, especially if the previous spanner monkey has covered the bolt in threadlock.

Hello, had it in gear and someone put their foot on the brake for me.
Pulley was still spinning when trying to remove.
Is both the flywheel and cam supposed to be locked before removing the crank pulley? I was told not to in case the pin snapped off inside while trying to remove the bolt.

You need to lock the crankshaft. Not sure how you do I on that engine though.

Good method on here, They say you can loosen the bolt by placing your socket over it, resting the wrench against the car and quickly turning the engine over once.

Be careful when locking the crank (hole in behind the starter) only takes an 8mm allen key or such like. Would't stand up to someone jumping on the breaker bar. Then it can be a gearbox off job to remove the fly, I've had to do that for someone before.

Have it in 5th gear.
Battery is dead at the moment but if nothing else works I'll give it a go.
Has anyone got a photo of where to lock off the flywheel? I've seen various pics that each one looks different from the other.
This is my view from under the car.

Pretty sure it's on top of the box. On my old gti is was behind the box though. They both share the be4 box so you might have to check.

Found it. As you can see in the pic there is a yellow tube (no idea how or where that came from it just lifted out) but it was in my way.
It was quite hard to get the pump out and the new one in due to the lack of space. Does anyone else jack there engine down for easier access? Think it mentioned not to in the haynes without removing other parts first.
Is the water pump gasket that comes with it sufficient or does anyone use any other forms of sealant along with the gasket?
