I'm about to start work on a mate's 2.0 HDI. It's an 03 plate and has done ~120k. He claims the coolant temperature needle has a tendency to wander or shoot right up and then sink back down. Warning does show on the MFD as well.
I have a few questions:
1. What's the average coolant temperature when doing city type driving?
2. Same again but for oil temp.
3. Is it likely to be thrmostat or sensor?
Any help/advice you can offer would be great.
Sorry for the lack of information as this is all I have to work with at the moment. I will update when I know more.

Likely temp sensor if it wanders. Should read about 85 iirc. Forget oil but I think it's around the same. Might be worth changing both unless you can read the sensor with pp2000

Thanks for the replies - I'll swap the temp sender over with a spare and see if that does it. Might as well drain the blue coolant that some a**e put in it and replace with some fresh G33. I'll post results back here
