We have just purchased a 2008 1.4 look and when I removed the mats for cleaning i realised the passenger footwell is wet any idea where to start looking at where the waters coming in? It has 62k on the clock
Also the battery was disconnected to charge it and when it was reconnected the abs light was on?

For the ABS light try dropping the driver window, sut all doors, disconnect battery, wait 15 mins, reconnect battery and then lean through driver window and turn sidelights on (Do not open doors or boot etc.) This is known as a soft BSI boot and this procedure should always be followed to prevent risk of major damage to the car's computers - try that and let me know the outcome.
The wet footwell will be due to a leaking heater matrix or leaking pipe to the matrix. Common leak point is where the plastic pipes coming from the bulkhead join the matrix (In pass footwell to the right - can't really miss it - will be warm if car was running). Dry all the plastic and run the car for a while (might have to drive for a bit) and see where gets wet first. If it's the pipes then you need new O rings (OEM part is £15 for pipes and O rings although generic O Rings can also work). If the matrix itself is leaking then you will need a new matrix installed. It is possible to do this without removing the dash, contrary to what people will tell you, but it is quite a fiddly job.

If you can locate the leak then I can help you repair it - just keep the header tank topped up with water
And any news on the ABS light?

Cars currently off the road anyway after a minor bump so picking up a new matrix tomorrow and o rings friends coming to help me replace it
Haven't tackled the abs yet I'll probably start that after the matrix is replaced
So far today I've stripped the bumper and stuff off to see how bad the damage is will need to be trawling the scrap yards this weekend looking for replacement parts

I've done 7 of these and 6 were the pipes - Well not the pipes exactly but where the plastic pipes join the plastic matrix cap. This is a known weak link and the join utilises wedge shaped O Rings to try and get a good seal: for that reason if you replace them with generic O Rings you may want to double stack them which is bad practice but a decent bodge. When I work on someone else's car I always suggest changing the pipes over as these come with the OEM O rings - the dealer won't sell them to you on their own.

I fixed mine with a double stack of gneric O Rings from toolstation or one of those type shops - worked for me on my last 2 cars with no issues to date. Stick a bit of vaseline on each ring before installation if you choose to go that way, makes everythinig work a little better. Generic O Ring set will be less than a tenner from pretty much everywhere (I got a 280 piece one for £4) from toolstation on a Sunday so that was a lucky save.
If you need instructions on how to do this change then just ask - I'll post a how to with photos if you need it.

Ok am gonna give this a bash today with the generic ones for a heater matrix and pipes am looking about £70 when really it could just be the o rings it's got to be taken apart anyway might as well try this first!

When you drain your coolant and disconnect the matrix hoses from the engine side of the bulkhead, give the top plastic pipe a good blast with a hosepipe if you have one. This just means that when you disconnect the pipes in the footwell you only spill water instead of a considerable amount of coolant. It's not necessary but it helps.
A brief rundown consists of:
1. Ensure car is cold
2. Open expansion tank cap
3. Remove bottom rad hose (drain into a bucket or washing up bowl or something if no drain pan)
4. Give expansion tank a good blast with hosepipe to flush system
5. Same again but in top of rad (need to remove hose)
6. Remove 2 rubber matrix pipes going into the bulkhead and screw (T20 I think) between the 2 protruding pipes
7. Remove glovebox (Bunch of T20s IIRC)
8. Get in the nice, wet, oily footwell
9. Undo the T20 (Maybe T15) screw fastening the 2 plastic pipes onto side of matrix assebly
10. Undo the philips screw clamping pipes to matrix pipes (only 1 - looks like there should be more)
11. Now the fiddly bit - there are 2-4 plastic clips on matrix assembly that hold the matrix (Big rectangle plate) in place - pull these back and try and slide the matrix out of the housing. It will budge eventually
12. Pull pipes toward bulkhead and bull matrix away from pipes
13. Hey presto water everywhere and pipes are free.
14. Replace O Rings and reassemble
15. Fill coolant and bleed system
16. Dry the footwell and try and remove the remaining oil
