Hi all, a newbie here, with a problem that I can't find a solution for here on the existing posts. To be honest, after an hour of looking and getting a sore bum, I've opted to post the problem instead.
I have a 2003 1.4HDI SW. It has a new battery and, a year old starter motor and always starts first time with a healthy fast cranking speed. But occasionally, after performing perfectly, it just won't crank and therefore not start. It always starts eventually after waiting 10 or 15 minutes,
I'm inclined to suspect it's an intermittent relay problem, partly because this is probably the simplest and cheapest thing to try first.
However, NOWHERE, here or anywhere can I find any mention of a Starter Motor Relay, the closest I've come is seeing someone mention a Starter Motor Actuator! Is that a funky name for a relay?
I spent hours today locating all the relays that I could find under the bonnet but non were associated with the starter, as far as I could tell.
Can anyone shed any light as to it's whereabouts? It's my wife's daily driver and I need to sort it ASAP.
I'm a mechanic but only have a basic scanner, which I will try tomorrow to see what it flags up.
Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated.
Lee.

The actuator (a.k.a. solenoid) switches the current directly from the battery to the starter(so it's a [quite beefy] relay) and also moves the starter motor axle out to engage the cogs on the flywheel.
When you have a refusal to crank, try tapping the solenoid - they can become 'sticky' and a bit of light percussive maintenance can help getting it unstuck.
There might well be some other smaller relay earlier in the chain. There are circuit diagrams available in the Maintenance Howto sub-forum, both for pre-plex and multiplex. Your's being a 2003, it would be multiplex.

Thanks mtempsch, Yeah I know about solonoids, but as it's a nearly new unit (a year old and unlikely, but not impossible to be sticking) I thought I'd start with relays, because access to the starter isn't great and it's so intermittant. I have taken out the fuse panel under the dash that houses two large circuit boards and has many miniature relays soldered to it, I'm wondering if it's one of these, I'll check out of he circuit diagram.
