Hi, I have a complex question that I need an answer to, if anyone is able to help that would be great.

I hope I explain this correctly.

I have a 2004 206 GTI 180

Basically I need to find the wire or source within the electrics of the car that tells the ECU that the engine is running. I need to find this as I need to trick the electrics into thinking the engine is running as the original ECU is no longer connected to my cars engine. On the car you can’t function things like the headlights and wipers until the engine is running. I need to by pass this so they work all the time.

I believe the wire im looking for is labelled PN2, however I am not sure and have not managed to find this within the loom.

If someone has answer for me on this unusual question it would be much appreciated.

Thanks Adam

As long as the ECU still reads from the crank sensor it will think the engine is running...which will also mean the rev counter still works. In theory...

Thanks for the responses, i will give the crank sensor a go see if that gives the desired result, the rev counter is not desperate, its mainly so that the stalks for lights and wipers send the CAN signals so everything functions. I believe that once i trick the ecu into thinking the engine is running this will happen. Thanks

What exactly are trying to do, is the ecu out if the car. The 206 doesn't use the CAN system.

Im trying to get all the functions of the car to work with out the engine running, as the engine will be controlled by other ECU separately.

One example of what im trying to do is for example you can turn on the side lights when ever but you cant get the dipped beams to work unless the engine is running. plus i need to stop the car going into 'economy mode' which also restricts what can be turned on.

i need to get all the lights, wipers, interior heater etc working. so i need to make the original wiring thinks the engine is running so everything works as normal.

however so far i have not managed to find a way of overriding this.

Thanks

I can operate my lights and wipers with just the ignition turned on. From memory, the headlights come on without the ignition being turned on.
I think it's the BSI you need to play with rather than the ECU. Never looked into the BSI settings in depth, but you might be able to turn Eco mode off using PP2000

Turn economy mode OFF in the BSI configuration set up.

The heater blower wont run until the BSI unit see's the engine is running.

I thought it was an MOT requirement that the tail, number plate, sidelights and headlights must work without the ignition, for obvious reasons breaking down at night.

I will see if i can disable economy mode from bsi, all this help from everyone is much appreciated.

does any one know if the stalks for the lights and wipers are in anyway linked through the wiring for the dashboard as currently it is disconnected as I'm sourcing another one at present. Just a thought i had as this may also cause the problem.

thanks

We install standalone ecus on gti180s several times. But we never cut cable of oem ecu cable. Except from injectors and ignition coils. You need to connect coolant temp and crank positions sensors connected to oem ecu. If ecu sees rpm from crank then everything fine. But you need to connect your ecu trigger to main relay under of ecu.

Which ecu are you using and which modification have you done on engines the oem ecu cant alter anymore ? ITB or Turbo =

Hi Schumi, Im using a KMS MP25 as the engine will be running with a turbo.

I will have a go at re-connecting the coolant temp and crank sensor.

Could I please ask you to elaborate in more detail about connecting the ecu trigger to main the relay under the ecu so that i can make sure i get this bit right. many thanks
