Hi guys,
I have a 2000 206XR 5DR 1.4l manual. It has one big rod connecting to an adapter thing near the engine which splits into two small rods that control the gearbox. Recently, while on a long-ish trip it refused to shift into fifth gear, till I stopped and coerced it a bit. It would shift in, but only with some resistance. Same for shifting back into neutral. Next day the issue was gone when I drove it to the mechanic.
Then a couple days ago, it started refusing to shift into 1st without shifting into 2nd first and then pushing straight through. Usually right after I put it into reverse.
There's a lot of play in the gear lever(moves about 1.5 inches horizontally/vertically), but it's never done this before. I did a cursory check of the linkage - got someone to wriggle the gear shifter while I looked at the gearbox, and all movement was brought right up to the gearbox. That is, the two little shift rods were moving with each movement of the gear shifter, so the "play" was in the gearbox itself. This seems a bit odd though, is it supposed to do that?
Either way, I tried taking a look from under it but there's a great big cover thing under the gear shifter which prevents me from seeing what the heck is going on and whether anything is loose.
Should I replace the smaller linkages(the two rods that connect to the gearbox) and hope for the best, or are my shift forks messed up or something?
