Hi

You'll like this one I'm sure. DOH!!!

I'm going to put a cam belt on a friends 2003 1.1 petrol.

It's lost a few teeth from the old belt and jumped 7 teeth, my question is how many teeth can it jump before the valves get bent

I don't want to do a compression test with it that far out of time and it's been stood for a month now so the belt will be worse, I don't want to risk snapping it.

7 teeth is a long way, about 1/4 turn of the crank at a guess so those valves could well be bent. I have seen it happen on these TU series engines before but sometimes you get away with it.

It sounds like there is not much rush in the job so you could hit Ebay and get a cheap usb bore scope to plug in to your smartphone and look at the piston crown through the plug holes, if there has been contact you will see it.

The other way is to get a belt kit, time it up, slap it on and compression test it, if it's good, get the owner to buy a lottery ticket.

That's my plan.

7 teeth is a long way, I have no idea how it was still running, but they said it was. I hadn't thought of a bore scope though, good idea, thanks

A little up-date for you.

It's official, 7 teeth is a tooth too far, put a belt on it and just fired it up

It sounded like a visit to a blacksmith's forge
