Hello Guys,

I recently bought a 206 for cheap as needed a lot of work! I have now done all this work and the car starts and drives like new! However there is one issue that is starting to bug me more and more!

Basically when the drivers door is open the car beeps constantly and does not stop. The key that came with the car is not an original Peugeot key.

I had a look at the ignition barrel under the plastics and realised that there is also a second barrel taped up with an original Peugeot key attached. I think that they snapped something in the original barrel so changed it however I cant understand why they would change all the locks in the car instead of getting the original barrel fixed..

Do you think that they just had a copy of the original key made and a new barrel?

or that they have changed all the locks to the new key?

As the key is not a button one I can only unlock the car by using the key. but when I unlock it all the doors unlock (so there is a central locking system otherwise it wouldn't do that)

Im very confused and not sure what to do?

The car beebs to indicate that the key has been left in the ignition. A nice reminder for you Wink

Which seems to consist with your findings.

However I would not know what to do in your situation. I probably would take the setup apart and rebuild it. I would also check to have a new set of keys made which work on the doors and ignition, and have the chip programmed... though that is not cheap.

Hopefully someone else can be a lot more helpful than me.

How considerate of them to leave the old barrel taped up inside the cowling! Smile

Do you see a key piece in? Taking it to locksmiths would perharps ger it out after surgery or bisection.

What is the type of beep when doors open. Then one as if you've left your headlights on?

I want to see pictures of this botch job Laughing

pAvax is right with the beeping, it's because the key is in the ignition. They have possibly left it in there when they changed the locks as the immo chip is inside the key and the car wouldn't start otherwise. This has a big knock on effect if the car is stolen as the security system is being by-passed, albeit it the most simple of ways.

It might be worth looking to see if you can take the old barrel and key out and just add the key to your keyring. The chips have a good range on them and you could have the chip in your pocket and the engine would still start

I should drink more morning coffee before replying DOH!!!

Try turning the original key. Or you reckon some bits snapped and now it's jammed? Can you pull the key out?

I too was thinking seeing photos of this would be brilliant Very Happy
I'd imagine the original barrel would still have couple of wires coming in that count for immo.

They probably tried to save on this job. Peugeot dealer can produce a set of barrels keyed for your car for £300 (may not need for the key code card, at least for the £30 glovebox barrel they didn't ask Smile just proof that I own a car)

Can't you just put the chip in the new key?

I had a second key cut (without chip), but had casing and everything to put the chip in. It wasn't made of massive plastic.

Just trying to find the cleanest and nicest solution to have everything sweet and sound.

Could you post photos of the key and the lock/barrel situation for us? Quite intrigued and it may help us understand it all better. It is for sure that the old barrel, with the bit in, is still connected (otherwise car wouldn't beep). That said, what... exactly is still connected? Just the live wire? Or more items?

How is the 'new' barrel wired?

Got a feeling it is a right mess tucked away there; but one which has potential to be nice and tidy just like how it is supposed to be.

You could as long as it's not the service key stuck in the barrel, I was just thinking about the quickest solution to stop the beeping.

You would need a remote shell and a blank blade and then get it cut to match the working key.

I'm guessing that there is still a fob attached to the old key which is in the barrel, otherwise the chip will be floating around in space, if this is a remote fob, you may be able to get remote locking sorted again if the circuit board is still in it. If this is the case you will only need to buy a blank blade. I've got one floating around in the shed somewhere that you could have.

If the barrel is anything like a Ford Focus barrel, with some force (read hammer) and a bit of time, you can dissemble it. I put one together earlier this week, and it is held with pins you can smash out. But I am unsure about the Pug one.

With a bit of willpower, the old barrel can be emptied... though, not sure if that is a wise idea without understand the full situation and plan how to fix it permanently.

Hey guys,

Sorry forgot to reply!

I have now fixed this issue Smile I will post pictures below of what they did!

I have ordered a new blank key and went into Timpsons and got a new chip reprogrammed and I have taken out the snapped key!

It turns out they had tapped the snapped key to the plastic bit that goes around the barrel

You can't upload them to the forum directly.
Instead you need to put them on some other web based image hosting service (or your own web site, if you've got one) and then use the links to the images there. Also see the Forum FAQ

By central locking I suppose you mean remote - [un]locking the other doors when using the key in one door shouldn't require anything to be done.
IIRC:
* The remote circuit board needs to be of the right version (of 3-4 out there)
* security code (originally supplied on a credit card style card. Can be had from dealer for a cost upon providing ID/proof of ownership)
* Peugeot Planet for programming
