I rashly agreed to fix a family members 2006 1.4 Look, but failed dismally! Both front windows have suddenly stopped working. (rears are manual)

Question 1) The window switch feels odd. The passenger switch feels normal with a definite click as you press up or down, but the driver's side feel spongy without any tactile feedback. Is this normal?

Question 2) Searching for a circuit diagram of the windows has been a huge pain in the a**e as there are loads of copies of the wrong / earlier diagram but none that match this car. All the diagrams I can find show fuse 29 as powering the windows but I don't have a fuse 29! Also the colour of the power wire is wrong and I have a thin additional wire in the switch which isn't shown. The handbook for the car and every picture of the fuse box / BSI that I can find says the windows are on fuse 12. Am I missing something or can someone point me at a wiring diagram that matches my car.

Question 3) Thinking I might have a break in the power feed, I tried jumping fuse 12 to the power input on the switch (purple wire in my case) but this blew the fuse. Checking with my meter all the motor connections and the power feed are shorted to earth. Aha I thought - the switch has collapsed internally (see question 1) and shorted the power input to earth. But if so why doesn't it blow fuse 12 all the time? I'm wondering if there is a relay in the power feed somewhere and when not energised it shorts the output to earth. Anybody know if this is the case and if so where is the relay?

Thanks for any help.

By the diagrams for multiplex (diagram 7) in the Maintenance forum looks like fuse 12 goes through a relay in the BSI and then on to the switch
