The car has started to get an intermitant rattle on pulling away from offside front. It had new drop links ( delphi ) and new CV joints and wheel bearings all within the last 8000 miles. Not sure of make but was told they were good ones, not ebay quality. I have done the full lock both left and right and no noise at all. Also no clonks when hitting pot holes etc. Any ideas. I do intend to renew discs and pads in the next few weeks, so thought if I knew what problem was I could sort that as well. car has done 80K gentle miles.

Many possibilities..

Have you replaced both inner and outer CV joints/both drive shafts?

Pulling away means engine tilts on its mounts, they could be worn allowing for more play.

Sometimes the source of the sound might trick you, it could be the exhaust manifold coming slightly loose when engine tilts, causing the rattle.

Can you reproduce the rattle when pulling away in reverse with similar acceleration? Make sure neighbours aren't watching when you'll be testing this Smile

If suspension was a suspect, are you getting any uneven tyre wear by chance?

Let's hope it's not a diff!

Check the bottom crank pulley. We had a rattle from that area and the pulley was shot.

Hi Sim, no only outer CV's. I might do that anyways inc D/shafts as she is a keeper. gazza82, I will have the timing belt done soon, I will get that changed as well. The 'rattle' has not happened since I posted. Even trying my hardest to get it to rattle just incase I could pinpoint it more acurately.

I found "red" dust around the pulley area when ours went .. it was where the insulation rubber was breaking down and also metal on metal contact .. looked like rust, but it was definitely finer.
