Symptom is that the starter sometimes spins without engaging in the flywheel. (Not supposed to be possible with a pre-engaged starter) I've had it out and both the teeth on the starter and the teeth on the flywheel look fine no missing teeth and no significant wear. I am considering replacing the starter to see if that cures it, but have noticed that there are many values quoted for the pinion distance for starters that would physically fit in my car: -5, -2, +5. So now I'm thinking that if someone has put on a starter with too small a pinion distance (e.g. -5 instead of plus 5) then you could get my symptoms.
So how do I find out what should be in my car? The VIN number says I have a TU3JP and the badges on the car say it is a 2007 206 1.4 Look. The existing starter is a Valeo TS8E2 which seems to have a pinion distance of -5. The -5 supports my theory but Valeo suggests it is original part (but could be a second hand replacement).
I guess I am going to have to take it off and try to measure the flange to flywheel distance but it's not going to be easy so if anyone can tell me the right answer I'd be grateful.
