Car - 2003 206CC 2.0 - LHD if this is important. 135,000 Km.

Mods - Free flow exhaust. No engine mods (yet!)

Problem - I have owned the car for approximately 2 months. I changed all fluids in the car in my first day of ownership and the car has had a full diagnostic run on a dyno during which all engine sensors were checked for correct operation. However, since I have owned the car there is a fairly loud intermittent metallic 'clicking' sound coming from what sounds like the left side of the engine. This is more noticeable when sitting stationary or at very low speeds such as stuck in slow moving traffic. No warning lights are on. Oil temp stays stable once up to temperature. Engine temperature does fluctuate, however never to any extreme. My first thought was that the noise could be the thermostat opening and closing, but the timing of the noise and the temperature fluctuations I am seeing do not really seem to coincide with each other.

Advice requested - Is this noise normal for a 2.0 engine and I am concerned needlessly? If not, does my initial thought of the thermostat being the cause seem right? If not, could anyone advise me how i could correctly diagnose what this could be so that I can them research how to fix it!

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

P.S - I may be 37 but this is my first car and so my knowledge on the engine layout itself isn't too great. I am fine with part names and what they do, but as to where they are that is another matter entirely!

Does it go away if you depress the clutch?

To be honest I don't know. The noise is a split second in duration, not a repetitive noise and at irregular intervals so it will be nearly impossible for me to find out.

I had a noise I was convinced was coming from the left front on a car only to find it was the right-rear hub!!

It's very hard to track a noise down while moving but stationary with bonnet up and leaving the engine to ideal once up to temp might work

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.
