ok so long story short, given a glx 99k fsh its sat for a year.

changed battery but wouldn't start. tested alternator too and there is 14.4 coming out both, (no change upon a load test though) The battery ECP gave me was smaller than the one i took out but have been assured its the right one. its a lion battery for a 99 glx (according ot website and bloke in store)

mutimetered both and they are flowing 14.4v my mrs picasso (same lump) is the same voltage

Have just taken it for a 1 hour drive on 70mph roads to see if it is charging and its not as i have just turned car off and the battery is flat again.

when i turn the key i see no lights on the dash, there is no electrics.

I am about to take alternator out and see what state the bushes are in.

Unless of course you guys can advise me its not the alternator.

really frustrated as after being sat for a year it passed its mot with NO advisories! just wanna be able to start it now without leads Sad

Have you checked the main earth, to make sure that's not snapped?

They're a very tight fit out of the factory, and it's a very common issue with these cars. Given the nature of the weather recently the constant expanding / shrinking may have caused it to finally give way, and it could be this sending you on a goose-chase?

I doubt that has any bearing on the charging though, so if the battery is definitely flat it's not likely to be that. Although I'd have thought a one hour motorway drive wouldn't cause a fresh battery to flatten to the point where the car won't start again. I thought once fired up, essentially the alternator took the brunt of all the electrics, topped up the battery and that the battery is basically used for auxilliary stuff when the car is off??

Hi Vortechs,

Was reading your Gti 180 buy thread earlier, looks nice!

Yes i checked the earth to the bell housing and then followed it to the chassis under the battery.

I am checking the alternator correctly i assume, from multimeter.. black to negative on battery red to the visible wire on the right had side of the alternator above the little green one, (should of been a rubber cap on it but was missing)

i have just realised that the negative terminal is loose so going to tighten that up now and decide if im to check bushes in alternator.

The alternator wont actually charge the battery if the alternator light on the instrument cluster isn't working.

I see the battery light before starting the engine, it then goes off like it should, the light workd but it has never indicated a problem.

Just called ECP the battery i have is a 40ah and 330cca and the oem one is a 45.

going to exchange for a 50ah and a 430cca and see if that meakes a difference, My gut feeling is that the battery is not beefy enough to start the car,
