I've a feeling the coil pack is a weak link in our 180, today was the second time in a few weeks it's dropped 2 cylinders with a coil pack code & having verified the connection to the ECU first time round it must be the CP.

Once things cool down it's OK again and I couldn't measure the resistances with the fault present since it'd cooled down enough by the time I got in there! Slightly suspect though since one bank of it is a pretty consistent 0.9 ohms whereas the other bank was varying between 1.1-0.8 ohms.

Main thing I'm interested in, is what brand is known to be a good one since I know there's some crap coil packs out there from otherwise "trusted" brands.

For now I've cleaned and re-gapped the plugs (Standard NGKs didn't look too worn but will replace with iridium soon since the gap was way too big, nearly 2mm!) Hopefully having 0.9mm gap will allow the coil to survive a while longer while we save, as well as running with the engine cover off.

NGKs don't work with some coilpacks .. Sagem? Possibly down to the resistors in NGK plugs.

I fitted Bosch Super 4 plugs to our 138 (CC) and didn't have a coilpack issue with the one fitted .. with the really long name which escapes me!

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

Ah could be another factor, TBH that was my main reason for wanting to change them is because I have a vehement hatred of NGK resistor plugs that's rooted in my bike days. So many strange running faults and breakdowns that ultimately were s**te resistor plugs. Deleting the "R" out of the part number was a fix, but much prefer either Bosch or Denso since they don't seem to fail the same way.

Long name... Magnetti-Marelli? Ducellier? Not 100% sure what make of CP currently on, but will be getting a replacement to keep in the boot for now as the original one has definitely been tested to the point of breakdown.

Luckily the newer PSA petrol engines have moved over to individual pencil type coils.

There has still been issues with spark plugs failing.

Third time's the charm, managed less than 5 miles before the coil pack broke down again so it's on the shopping list! I'm 95% sure the excessive plug gap is what killed it since it was huge. New plugs obviously on the cards too!
