Bit of a weird one. The ESP/ASR light comes on at half-strength when the electrics wake up e.g. on unlocking the car with the fob, or after sitting in the car waiting for 3 minutes for power to go off and then turning the key to auxiliary power. The light is pretty clearly visible in the dark but not during daylight. Turning the sidelights (and therefore dash lights) on makes no difference, neither does ignition or running the engine. We've had the car for nearly a year and I've not noticed it before although to be fair, we hardy ever drive it after dark.

The car does not have traction control fitted as verified by Servicebox. Any clues? Thanks.

I can’t help you but I remember my fever used to do the same thing, 1.4 8v no abs/esp but one of the dash lights used to half illuminate, between disconnecting the battery and hitting a few potholes too hard accidentally the issue disappeared lol good old french wiring.

Hope someone can help more than I did by the way Smile

‘04 1.4 8v - Moonstone - No issues
‘54 GTi 180 - Onyx black - Off the road for MOT work

For a person who despises french cars I feel a slight collection coming on

I've reset the BSI four times which of course includes dis/reconnecting the battery in careful sequence, but no luck. I've not tried potholes though which may be a last resort especially as there plenty to choose from around here! So still scratching my head. Thanks.

Possibly only the early 206's (pre-2000) would have had ABS as an option, anything later is likely to have had it as standard. As you are getting the warning, the car believes you have ABS at least on the front, not necessarily on the rear.

So, as you are getting a warning, check your ABS rings as a starting point.

Each wheel should have a silver 'toothed' ring on it, and one of these is either very worn or potentially has a crack/fracture in it.

The lights being dim on the display unit are a common issue, as the unit itself is prone to dry joints. They can be repaired pretty easily.

The ABS system is not involved in this. It's the ESP/ASR light which is showing. I have ABS but not ESP.

Whilst it is probably me getting confused and mis-recalling, I was certain this was what was displaying when my ABS ring had cracked. (It was well over 7 years ago).

I think I was getting two messages coming up also ..but I recall at the time I read elsewhere it was common for ABS sensors to throw this warning out too.

Thanks for that. The wiring diagram shows no correlation between the ESP dash light and the ABS system when ESP is not installed. Both connect to the BSI module which under these circumstances is my main suspect, but there are no faults being generated according to Planet 2000.
