Hi there, I recently purchased a Gti 180 in place of my standard Gti and noticed a bad juddering when setting off and slightly when going down gears around town, been to a few places and none seem to have any idea as to what the problem is, my old Gti had no issues with clutch and had done double the mileage. Wondering if any of you can help me out,

Thanks Dan

Hi Dan

Every gti 180 well have clutch judder one day which is very common on 180's it due to

Flywheel slightly warped or
clutch release bearing going and starting to dig in to the clutch pressure plate.

Some times replacing the clutch works for while but with out getting new flywheel or machining old flywheel the judder will come back.

Regards
Kyle

Thanks for the reply, do you reckon it'll be worth replacing the flywheel and getting a clutch kit, as I dont really won't it to damage the gearbox or anything if it was to get worse.

Thanks Dan

Not every 180 will have the warped flywheel but if you do both then you know 100% it will be alright.

You could just put a clutch on it and then 2 mouths later the dam clutch juder back Smile

But yes if you do the flywheel you can 100% have no clutch judder unless you drive you car hard over the year lol Smile

Kyle

Do you know if a flywheel is reasonable price, can't seem to find a price online. May have to take a trip to pug letchworth see if they can be as generous Smile

Hi Dan,

Did you ever take your Peugeot to the Letchworth garage? I'm having the same problem, when I pull away it judders and 2 or 3 times I've struggled to get it into 1st or 2nd gear.

Thanks
Dave

hello dan
my 180 have quite similar problems to yours. my judder comes when moving from 1st to 2nd gear only and i was told i would need a new kit and flywheel machined. if im not wrong a new flywheel cost about 300-400 pounds going by ebay price but i dont have that kind of cash so machining of the flywheel and a new clutch kit might be more viable for me.

Hello guys Smile Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I think I'm suffering the same problem and hoped to get some feedback.

I have the judder when (sometimes) pulling away in 1st gear. I also have nasty noises - mostly scraping, which is noticeable at idle in neutral but gets worse (and changes slightly) when I engage the clutch. I always thought scraping would be the clutch itself, but I'm not getting any slipping, and gear changes seem to feel just as smooth as always.

I'm looking at prices around 300-350 all-in for the clutch replacement, and a surprisingly low price of 150 ish to do the flywheel. Judging by the comments in this thread, and a quick look on eBay (not 180 parts, but still LuK) - is this flywheel price even realistic, or should I be very careful? The guy is a friend of friend, but with such an important part, I'm slightly paranoid to say the least Smile As this problem has pretty much surprised my in the past week or so, I'd rather not do both jobs unless I have to - but if it's recommended to do so for reasons other than saving on labour charges, I'll have to take that advice.

I don't believe in fate - but I started thinking about trading in the 180 for another car, only a week ago. I've owned it since 2008, and to be honest it's been a really good car - just the usual wear-and-tear maintenance jobs, cheap and easy MOTs, and surprisingly good fuel consumption for this kind of engine. My only real complaint is the lack of 6th gear. Maybe it's just reminding me how much I love it? Smile If I don't get rid of it now, I'm sure I will either at the end of the year, or some time next year - once the new 208 GTI has had some exposure to the driving world, and I've had a chance to test-drive one.

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance you can offer guys!

PS - I used to have an account here a few years ago but it's been cleaned off for inactivity I think - so apologies for apparently diving in with a help request on my 1st post, it wasn't intentional Smile

when you say 150 "to do the flywheel" do you mean to get it skimmed ???if so that quite expencive but for a new one that seem too cheap tbh.
normaly around 50-75 for a skim.
when i done mine on the 180 i just put a new clutch kit in and left the flywheel and its been fine but that may just be luck.
its done 6k ish since the change i also used a luk kit main reson was if the standerd ones have a common problem then why put the same back in as you know its gonna go again.

Sounds like your clutch release bearing is on its way, it will get gradually worse as it goes on, also you will be able to feel the vibration through the clutch pedal and you will also get a nice high pitch squeal when depressing the pedal, and the pedal gets stiffer and the bite point becomes smaller.

New clutch kit will cure it, I replaced mine last summer after it gave up the ghost 2 weeks after having the first symptoms of the release bearing going.

I paid £100 for my clutch kit, everyone says go for LUK or Valeo but thats down to how much you want to spend,

I bought a clutch kit made by national, never heard of them before but 6 months later clutch is fine and no judder and the pedal is nice and light aswell, although I did rebleed the clutch after fitting.

I was in 2 minds whether to skim the flywheel, I had a quick look at it and decided not to bother.

My 180 has a small amount of clutch judder but nowhere near as bad as some of these complaints always sets off fine changes gear fine no strange noises just abit of a clutch pedal shake when setting off with low revs

Thanks for the replies guys Smile I got a couple of opinions on it, and decided to get the clutch done first - with a check on the flywheel while it's there. I'm getting an LuK kit, so the job is costing 320 to 350 - but I'm happier with this guy doing it I think.

The guy said he wasn't sure if it was single or dual mass, so I think that price was for a new single mass + fitting. After he had a quick drive of it, he suspected either the pressure plate or release bearing, so I went for it.
