For the second time in about 2000 miles, the mrs 2004 137 hp GTI has chewed up the aux belt. The first time was just after we bought it so put that down to lack of servicing, this morning it did the same to the brand new belt i fitted back then.
Any thoughts on the cause?

Could be just bad luck or something is leaking on it and weakening the belt, something rubbing in the belt that is wearing it away? Check for evidence on the snapped belt.

Same on my gti, turned out to be the tensioner pully. Was to much sideways movement which caused the belt to move. Check the tensioner mate.

The tensioner is about £35 from Euro Car Parts. The other pulley is about £15 from the Peugeot dealer.

Also check for wobbly crankshaft pulley or belt rubbing on the edge of it.

Yes i did wonder if it was that. When i was refitting the new one it seemed to have more movement in it than it should.
