Good evening all Cool

I'm looking to chop my current Audi TT in for a 206 so my partner could learn to drive in it and put the extra towards wedding plans Rolling Eyes (or mods...)

Anyway, Ive been offered a 1.4 8v Look 5-door on a 52-plate. Looks a clean car owned by sellers father who died recently. It has 105k on it and has recent belts done they say but couldn't find much history apart from recent tyres and exhaust looks new. However it has a few faults I wanted some advice on so I know what I'm looking at.

Firstly, the rear o/s door latch has a faulty sensor and shows open all the time. I changed the latch on a Golf mk4 so shouldn't be an issue to sort that. However, it has STOP flashing on the dash all the time. I did read a thread where they could be linked but I haven't scanned the car yet with a code reader. Will this read ok?

Also, my friend looked underneath and commented that the rear axle/torsion bar looked corroded/rusted and that the front wishbones and shocks also looked rusted. Is some rust on these normal and how easy is it to check the condition of these? Car drove fine with no knocks or bangs from anywhere. Got up to temp and fans kicked in as they should, fluids all fine for level and no HG failure signals present.

Most puzzling one is that the drivers door lock is solid where I couldn't even get the key in the lock and the battery had gone flat meaning the remote locking wouldn't work even after a bump. Only way to lock/ unlock was the passenger door. Can the locking be resynced easy, or is it possible its fine but the door sensor is affecting it?

I've been offered the car for £400 with tax til April and MOT til March so for the price it does seem a good deal even with the faults listed above.

Any other things to look at on it? If I get it, I'll be giving it a good service straight away.

Surface rust on suspension components on a car of that age is normal. For £400 it's worth fixing the little problems. Not sure why that STOP light would be on though. Can't imagine is being to do with the door.

Never known the stop light coming on with a faulty door lock. The locks will bounce if you use the remote and interior light flash when you start driving.
The codes need to be read to establish why the STOP light is flashing.

There is a procedure for resyncing the remote, but if it has lost it's coding then it will need synchronising using dealer software.

Even if you need to buy 2 new central locking motors, it will still be a bargain at that price.

i think if remember correctlty in my old gti, i managed to drive 1 mile down the road where my passenger didnt shut his door correctly and stop flashed up on my dash

Be worth checking the software version but you'll need someone with Peugeot Planet to do that

Software update varies in price from about £50 upwards. Depends what the dealer is like as they all seem to charge differently.

The OH didn't shut the passenger door properly and I wondered what was going on when the interior light started flashing like it was at a disco. Didn't have the STOP light flash though. Must have up to date software or a later version.

As Edward says its a good price at 400 I'd buy it and just tiddy it up
The latch could be as simple a faulty micro switch on the door? 2min replacement if so, you have to remember that it's a 11year old car that's coverd just over 100k its bound to have a bit of wear & tear here and there.

Get the codes read.

The 8V engine is really simple to work on.

The 206 suspension is relatively simple and easy to work on and all parts are cheap. Don't worry about the rust on the suspension components unless it is really, really bad. The rear axle in particular usually looks really awful on these.

The rear stub axle bearings wear and apparently the best fix for that is a reconditioned complete axle. Plenty of posts here on that. Axles are advertised on the web and if you fancy changing the bearing (it seems the axle is usually beyond saving at this point though) there are videos on uTube.

If it is clean and tidy inside I would go for it.

i didnt have the interior light in as its cool to try and wind the driver they flick it on and off every second :@ so i just took the damn thing out Razz

but yeah dffo worth getting the software checked Smile

my brothers 206 1.4 stop light staring flashing one day..was cause its was loosing brake fluid (due to rear wheel cylinder) cause it was dropping in level there is a sensor in the brake fluid pot which triggers light when low..check that out as it could just be low brake fluid if its not been checked recently Smile
